As
a search for the illusive fish, these works show a delicacy where
the hand applies paint as an emotion from within. Like the reflective
lake, the nature of life disguises the vital form we might be searching
for - where lies the illusion - where lies the non-being? In life,
love, war and fishing, it is easy to ignore our heart, to be fooled
by our eyes and logic. Painting onto the pages of discarded French
prayer books as a tactic for catching fish in the metaphysical ocean,
each page is evidence of that act. With an honest openness, and
no preconception, there is a risk that the ego of the artist may
fail. But an even greater risk is that she might discover the unimaginable.
As a regular ritual beginning in 1997 Tess Edwards created this
fascinating archive of work which extends across 17 books with more
than 500 individual paintings.
These
small works show subtle layers of colour and meaning and could easily
escape our attention, but there is an echo that attracts or demands
our deliberation. These works are artifacts; as private documents
they have laid buried between the hard covers of the books they
were painted in for only a few to see. The images might have remained
thus, in a state of concealment forever. By accessing the very latest
pigment printing techniques and the expertise of Pharos Editions,
the images have become larger than life, and accessible as an exhibition.
Each of the selected pages has been printed as an edition of 25
with highly permanent pigment on archival paper308 gram Hahnemuehle
paper.
